From the Studio…

Hello friends,

Sending warm wishes from a wintery Sydney where the days are vacillating between clear, sunny ones and cold, wet, grim affairs… Life has been busy with art shows, art cards and even some art making. Read on for more!

Latest News

It was all happening in June - I was accepted into the Gallery Lane Cove’s inaugural Winter Salon with my artwork ‘Ochre Walls, Arkaroola’  painted to remember my time in this incredible outback landscape. It was wonderful to venture out on a chilly night to the buzzing opening, catch up with some friends and see some excellent artwork. It was exciting to be part of it.

I was also a participant in the Incognito Art show with my work shown in both the Sydney and Townsville sites. One of my artworks has sold and two remain available... I can now reveal the sold artwork - San Miguel Streetscape - a watercolour, ink and gouache artwork based on a street scene from the lively, festive town of San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico. I loved wandering the cobblestone streets of San Miguel and enjoying the architecture of this colonial town. This is where I celebrated the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) last year.

Art cards are here! I am happy to report that my art cards are now available at my online shop.

I have always loved a beautiful card to gift or display so it’s lovely to have some with my very own original designs. There are eight designs to choose from with a strong focus on Australian flora as well as an interior (with cat and Jacaranda) and an intriguing landscape (from Mexico).

These blank greeting cards come with a recycled kraft envelope and are available individually or as Build your own Bundles of three or five cards.

Seasonal Noticing

Recently I was lucky enough to be taken out by my son on a whale watching trip. We couldn’t have had a better day - the sea was flat, the sun was shining and the whales were parading! We seemed to have an endless procession of humpback whale pods passing by on their annual migration north. I feel very lucky to live where I do and to have the chance to be a tourist in my own town at times like these. An exhilarating experience.

Also around at this time of the year - Camellia flowers are blooming. The garden where I live hosts a number of different Camellia trees with their flowers bright against the dark green foliage. The flower pictured is photographed in a special vase I picked up at an op shop that cradles one flower in a tiny dash of water. Lots of flower gazing ensures.

Artwork in Focus - Billy Buttons

Billy Buttons are another favourite Australian flower. I first became aware of this cheerful globe-like flower when designing a teaching program about the Koziusko National Park. My colleague and I became quite fascinated by them and included them in the research project that our nine and ten year olds undertook.

Since then, I began to see them about  - they are a favourite of florists with their long upright stems and work nicely as dried flowers too. In fact, I bought a bunch at the Carriageworks markets at least a year ago. The flowers have since dried but retained their colour and can be found dotted around my home in a selection of vases.

This artwork is based on some living specimens however. I saw these at the Mt Annan Botanical Gardens which my friends and I had visited, lured by the promise of swathes of paper daisies… It was another occasion where it was heartening to be part of a crowd of people who had made a pilgrimage to admire plants! We enjoyed that display but also roamed about to see the other plantings which included Billy Buttons. I loved the rhythm created by the stems of these plants, contrasting with the spherical flowers. My Billy Button painting also features in my Art Cards collection.

That’s all for this edition of From the Studio. I hope you get some time to get outside and look at some flowers too!

Until next time.

xx Ella
