This artwork is close to my heart – I made it at the inspiring printing workshop in Guanajuato, Mexico under the tutelage of master printmaker Hugo Anaya. It is a contact print and was made using just three colours – yellow, red and blue. These were applied in layers on a piece of Perspex, sections removed, parts highlighted, texture added etc before being printed onto paper. I did four layers (two of blue to add contrast on the left-hand side and in the depths of the tunnel). It is based on a view of the tunnels that snake beneath the city of Guanajuato where the river used to run. The wealthy built bridges over the river in order to extend their properties. In this section however, the extensions weren’t completed and the beautiful arching bridges remain. We stood in the tunnels looking up at these curving arches and the strong shapes formed by shadows with a square of sky beyond. The artwork really pushed me out of my comfort zone but I was so pleased with how it turned out after a lot of hard work and constant advice from Hugo.
